Embracing differences, building dreams

Our books and learning programs for children are designed for teachers, parents, families, and anyone who believes in building a world where everyone can feel proud to be themselves.

Children form stereotypes as young as age 4. Research shows early exposure to diverse family structures and cultural backgrounds helps counteract bias.

Why our work matters:

  • A lack of inclusive education contributes to bullying and isolation.
  • 70% of LGBTQ+ youth experience symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • 58% consider suicide — 3x higher than their peers.

Gender and sexual diversity

Gender Identity

There are many different gender identities. The most well known gender identities are: woman and man. People can also identify as non-binary, meaning not fitting the expectations and boxes of ‘woman’ and ‘man’. Sometimes who we are - or how we identify - matches our bodies, this is called cisgender. And, sometimes how we identify does not match our bodies, this is called transgender.

Body

Our sex consists of a unique combination of chromosomes, hormones, genes, primary and secondary sex characteristics. This applies to everyone, including intersex people. Intersex people are born with bodies that do not fit the binary notions of male or female bodies. In biology, we see sex as a spectrum on which everyone has a spot and less as a binary with only male and female bodies. Everyone's sex looks different, think of it as a spectrum rather than a dichotomy.

Gender Expression

We show others who we are with our gender expression. This is where it gets colorful! You express yourself with the way you dress, speak, behave and with your hobbies and interests. We try to read each other’s gender identities on the basis of their feminine, masculine and/or androgynous (a mix of both) expression. The element of gender and its expression is culturally constructed; what is seen as "masculine", "feminine" or "androgynous" varies by culture.

Attraction

Attraction is how you find yourself feeling drawn (or not drawn) to other people. You can be attracted to a certain gender, a certain body type and/or even a certain expression. We all have our own personal preferences.
